New lock down rules for Gibraltar Image

On Sunday 22 March 2020, in a specially conveneved live broadcast, the Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo announced new lock down measures for Gibraltar:

This is a summary of what he said:

  • Total social lockdown
  • New rules come into effect midnight Monday night
  • Essentially, 30 hours to make arrangements for businesses to close
  • Retail trade to be closed except groceries and pharmacies
  • Construction sites to be closed unless essential works (permit required)
  • Gyms to be closed
  • Restaurants can continue their takeaway and delivery trade
  • Still able to go out to exercise and shop for essentials but not with anyone else unless from the same household
  • Permitted to go to work or to go out for a purpose, but please use common sense and please get home as soon as you can
  • The local police will have power to enforce these restrictions from Tuesday
  • Measures for employers to be able to 'pause' employment (a system which exists in Spain) and the ability to claim unemployment benefit from tonight - a meeting is taking place this afternoon at 6pm - decision being made in conjunction with Spanish authorities
  • Measures to ensure businesses do not go under during this economic 'coma'
  • These rules contravene freedom of movement, however, are necessary in this public heath emergency
  • There is enough food for everyone
  • Frontier remains open for the above essential purposes
  • Additional nurses from the private sector have been engaged by government

Here's our summary of Friday's emergency budget

At Chestertons we will continue to offer a service as best we can.  We are busy on short term flexible tenancies as we find some landlords and now some vendors making their properties available at below commercial rates to assist the community effort.  We are grateful to the utility companies and to all our cleaners who are willing to assist at short notice.

Meanwhile, we take our role in the Gibraltar community very seriously so if you, or any vulnerable people in Gibraltar that you know, could use our help, please let us know.

You can contact us on +350 200 40041 during office hours or info@chestertons.gi at any time.
